At Elmubas Petfoodgroup we are specialists in food for dogs and cats, and we want to help you care for your pet. Today we’d like to talk to you about treats and rewards, what they are for and how to give them.
As long as your vet doesn’t recommend otherwise, we can give our pet extra products to reinforce good behaviour, support learning, build bonds or even make it easier to administer medication.
But these treats and rewards can unbalance our pet’s diet, as they are not part of the animal’s full food portion, which already contains all the nutrients your pet needs based on its characteristics and lifestyle.
Therefore, treats should be given in controlled amounts. They should never exceed 10% of daily calories.
This is important to avoid ‘diluting’ the nutrients in the complete food, or exceeding the amount of calories that could cause the animal to gain weight.
