How important is fibre in the diet of dogs and cats?

At Elmubas Petfoodgroup, we specialise in dog and cat food recipes, and we want to help you to take care of your pet.

Today, we want to explain what fibre is and its role in your pet’s diet.

Carbohydrates that cannot be digested are commonly known as dietary fibre. Depending on their solubility and fermentability, dietary fibre can have health benefits for both dogs and cats.

For example, soluble fibres dissolve in water and can increase viscosity in the gastrointestinal tract. This could delay gastric emptying and modify the postprandial glycaemic response.

Other sources of fibre may ferment in the colon, leading to increased production of short-chain volatile fatty acids. Some fibres have a prebiotic effect as they specifically stimulate the growth and beneficial activity of microorganisms living in the large intestine of our pets.
