Today, we are going to explain what amino acids are, why some are essential and what role they play in your pet’s diet.
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When proteins are broken down or digested, the result is amino acids, which the body uses for vital functions such as growth or repairing tissues.
There are about 200 known, but only about 20 are usually found as components of proteins. All have a vital function. But some are synthesized by the body itself and others are not. The latter are called essential amino acids. As the body cannot produce them on its own, they must be included in the diet. The rest can be obtained from the essential ones by a process called deamination.
That is why it is so important that your pet has a balanced diet containing all the essential amino acids in the right proportions to ensure its health.
